 Coventry Copsewood celebrated another fantastic year on the football pitch under manager Mick Conneely at the club's awards night recently and Nicola Foskett was named as Player of the Year.Foskett, aged 24, hit 37 goals during the club's West Midlands League Premier Division Championship winning season and was just pipped at the final hurdle for both the club and League top goalscorers accolade by team mate Ria Baker in their final league outing of the season. As well as clinching the club's player of the year award, Foskett was named West Midlands Regional Ladies League Premier Division Player of the Season. Ria Baker hit 45 goals, including eight goals in the final game of the season against Walsall to capture the Golden Boot Award. Baker, who is now in her second spell at Copsewood having previously played at Aston Villa and Coventry City, is among a number of Copsewood players who England scouts have been casting an eye over as is newcomer Kate Stevens who capped her debut season by jointly picking up the most improved player of the season award, Youngster Kate, who originates from Oxfordshire along with two, possibly three other Copsewood players is tipped for further success on an international stage. Marsha Towey was named jointly named with Kate as the most improved player. An original member of the club having put on the colours of Marconi back in 2000, ever improving Marsha has enjoyed another good season having taken up football at a later age than many players do. Players' player of the year Leanne McKenna is among the players England scouts have been tracking, her football family pedigree is well documented and continues to shine after picking up a few tips she inherited from Granddad and former legendary seventies Sky Blues defender George Curtis. McKenna, now in her third season, bagged 15 goals and it's no surprise that Copsewood's rise and turning point seemingly excelled after McKenna's acquisition to the Club three seasons ago. Local girl Chantelle Stanley has enjoyed a great first season in the back four and another player who has been instrumental for the club this season is former England under-17 International Amanda Whalley who celebrates her 21st Birthday in the coming week. Bright prospect Natasha Smithers is expected to face competition next season if she wishes to hold on to the number one jersey with Conneely needing to bring in a specialist goalkeeper to extend his playing options despite utility defender/midfielder Rebecca Green deputising in a number of games and looking more than comfortable for much of the time in her newly acclaimed role. Kayleigh Brookes, now in her sixth season, hit seven goals but in the main compared to previous seasons Brookes had a below par season. Leona McCook netted ten goals and Sarah Brown chipped in with two goals. New recruit Jodie McGulkin hit six goals in nine appearances towards the end of the season and also helped pushed the team to its highest ever point in history. Photo - Glenn Lawrence Media
