 Reading FC Women got the better of a three-way battle to land the South West Combination title at the first attempt and are promoted to the Southern Division of the Premier League for next season. After winning the Southern Region League last season, Reading went through the season with an unbeaten record and clinched the title in their penultimate game with a 3-1 victory over their main rivals Plymouth Argyle, who eventually finished six points behind Reading with AFC Bournemouth in third place. The Championship is a culmination of a successful two years after taking over the former Reading Girls team and the awarding of the Reading Centre of Excellence to the club. Lee Herron was appointed as Director of Women's Football and manager Frank Rodriguez, assisted by Mark Allen and Alan Manners, assembled a strong squad which contained a number of players with Premier League experience. These players include former England under-19 international Natasha Caswell and Cheryl Williams, who returned to the club after a spell at Bristol Academy. Goalkeeper Amy Carr was recently called up to the England under-17 squad and was on the bench for both their matches in the UEFA Under-17 Championships in Switzerland last week. Laura Woodley carried on from where she left off last season and was equally prolific in front of goal in the Combination, scoring 24 goals to help her team to the title whilst Natasha Caswell, Kayleigh Hines and Lauren May were also regularly on target. Emma-Jayne Pearmine, a survivor from the old Reading Girls side, has enjoyed a fine season as have the likes of Rachel Fell, Jo Chubb and captain Kelly Chambers and promising young defender Becky Sargent has returned from a long term injury. In fact, the Reading defence had a great campaign overall and conceded just 16 goals in the league.
