 Liverpool captain Gayle Formston is savouring the opportunity to lead her side into Sunday's F.A.Women's Cup quarter final against Newcastle Utd.The Reds have been enjoying a good season and are heavily involved in the Northern Division promotion race and Gayle feels that this week's game is a very welcome distraction. "This weekend allows us a little break from the pressures of the league as we are playing in the quarter finals of the FA Cup!" she says. Liverpool have come through some tough matches to reach the last eight, including a 3-2 win at Barnet in the Fifth Round, and Gayle is full of praise for her team mates. "To reach this stage of the competition has been a deserved achievement for us," she says. "We have displayed some good football along the way and most importantly showed our battling qualities and desire when it has really mattered to ensure that we are still in the hat at this stage. We will need to do more of the same on Sunday against Newcastle because although we got the draw we were hoping for, the same also apples for them! "They (Newcastle) are a well-organised team and apply pressure well, never giving time or space on the ball. The two league games against them have been tough encounters, however we were victorious on both occasions and so probably enter the tie as favourites. There will be no room for complacency on our behalf though and we will by no means under estimate our opponents." Liverpool have not reached the semi finals for ten years and Gayle, a survivor from those days, is keen to emulate the success from that period. "The magic of the cup and the strong possibility of a semi-final appearance has got all the girls buzzing, not least myself. I was fortunate to be part of a successful Liverpool squad in the early 90s when we reached the FA Cup Final three years running and I can still remember how good it felt in the lead up to those cup games and am thirsty to experience it again. Indeed the clubs last appearance in the final was in 1996 at The New Den, which again provides the venue for this year's final!" she enthuses. "For many of our relatively young squad, the quarter finals of the FA Cup is a new experience so it's important that we put all other things aside for one day and concentrate on the job in hand and most of all relax, enjoy it and play the football we are capable of. The game is there for the taking for both teams so it is imperative that we are the side that wants it most on the day! "The rewards of reaching the semi finals would go a long way to again raising the profile of the club and providing the players with confidence that can then be taken into our league games."
