Casey delighted with win - 17 Feb 2006 - Women's Football NewsCharlton Athletic captain Casey Stoney was happy with her team's display during their impressive 5-0 victory over Bristol Academy in the quarter finals of the F.A.Women's Cup.

The Addicks made light of the boggy pitch and Casey told Women's Soccer Scene that they adapted well to the difficult surface. "Considering the conditions, and the pitch was abysmal, five goals and a clean sheet, and a strong performance with no panicky moments, we are happy," she said. "We had a job to do and we expected them to give us a game, which they did for the first twenty minutes of the first half, but as soon as we got the first couple of goals we knew we had to build on that, and we did.

"A few of the girls have been away with England during the week and they felt drained enough, so to play on a heavy pitch like that didn't help. They adapted well, but started to feel it towards the end."

Casey was also full of praise for the team's finishing during the match. "The first two goals were a little bit fortunate as the ball stuck in the mud and it was unfortunate for their goalkeeper," she admitted, "but it's good to get some goals behind us. Personally I think we've got the best strikers in the country, so if they can keep scoring, it is great for them and for the club."

And as a defender, Casey was naturally delighted not to have conceded any goals and was delighted to see Eartha Pond on her way back from a long term injury. "Eartha has been out for two years, but I have never seen anyone work so hard. Even during her injury, she was at training every Tuesday and Thursday doing her rehab," she says. "There is no one in the game who can put in a tackle like Eartha, so to have her back is a massive boost for us."
