 Crewe Alexandra have made a great start to life in the Premier League and the newly promoted side sit on top of the Northern Division after their opening five matches.Beth Clark is one of the few players in the Crewe squad with top flight experience and she told Women's Soccer Scene that their lofty position is a welcome surprise. "It's fantastic!" she smiles. "It's probably not what we expected but it is exciting." Crewe took over the leadership on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over high riding Wolverhampton Wanderers. "We stuck to our game plan really well," says Beth. "We scored two good goals and were pleased with the performance as a whole as Wolves are a decent side, and that will be good for our confidence." The Midland Combination Champions were beaten in their opening league match by Lincoln City but things have got better from then. "We didn't deserve to lose against Lincoln," Beth insists, "so we took confidence from that game. Since then we have played our own game and done it well. "Beating Newcastle was probably the big turning point - we battled hard and deserved the victory we got. That gave us a great boost as we have played one of the big contenders and beaten them." This week, Crewe face a return match with Lincoln in what will be another top of the table clash. "It's the third time in a row we have had to play one," laughs Beth. "Everyone is looking forward to it, we'll be extra determined after losing the opening game and this match might come at a good time for us." Despite their excellent start, Beth is happy to keep her feet on the ground and keep a realistic view of what lies ahead. "Personally, I would be happy for us just to establish ourselves in the league," she says. "We are looking at mid-table and above, based on what we have seen so far. "We knew we had a decent team last year but we've probably done better than we expected. The new players have added a lot and given us extra strength - it's surprising to be top, but in a nice way. "There have been some funny results this season, so we are not getting carried away. We are just going to do the best we can and see where it takes us - every game is going to be tough so we must just concentrate on ourselves and not worry about anyone else." Next week, Crewe take a break from league action and take on holders Charlton Athletic for a place in the quarter finals of the Premier League Cup. "I've played against Charlton a couple of times while I was at Liverpool," says Beth. "It will give us a good chance to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the country and see how far we come, and how far we need to go."
