Crystal Palace goalkeeper Kelly Cooper is confident that her team can pull away from the lower reaches of the Southern Division table and head for mid-table.Kelly played a starring role with a great second half performance as Palace picked up an important point by drawing 1-1 away to Bristol City and she can see brighter things ahead for her team following a difficult spell. "We're pretty low in the table at the moment," Kelly told Women's Soccer Scene, "so any points will help towards us getting away from the relegation zone. We have had a lot of players shifting around between the reserves and the first team so it has been a little unsettling. "We had a good pre-season and started off the season quite well but then we lost a few players and it went downhill a bit, but hopefully we are going up again now." Palace have been on the wrong end of some narrow defeats recently and Kelly, who joined the club during the summer after a long spell at Charlton Athletic, feels that one aspect of their game has been missing, a lack of goals - surprisingly for Palace. "I think it's that we can't score," she says. "It's been a big problem in our game. We can defend for ninety minutes but everyone can make a mistake and we might concede one or two, but if you have got no goals to act as a cushion, that's when you start losing." Reflecting on the Bristol City game, Kelly was very satisfied with the team's performance. "We've picked up a good point and it was a very good game," she replies. "In the first half, I thought we played really well but they managed to score a goal against the run of play. After half time, we got an early goal - a good one from Kelly Newbound who slid in at the far post to score - and held on very well until the end." Kelly herself made a string of fine saves in the second half and one in particular, from City striker Ellen King, gave her great satisfaction. "I'm pleased (with the saves), especially from the one-on-one," she smiles. "I hesitated slightly but stood my ground, waited for her to shoot and tipped it past the post so I did well there. "We are more than capable of getting away from trouble. I think we've got to forget what has happened in the past and look forward now." | ||||||||||
